Welcome to Conversations with Death

"A place to encourage death positivity and allow our grief to take up space."

Welcome to Conversations with Death, an online resource tackling grief, death and dying for the Queen’s University community. University can be a tumultuous time for many students, bringing new opportunities, responsibilities and independence into the forefront of our lives.

This time of significant change can be stressful enough as is, but when you add grief and loss into the equation, things can quickly become overwhelming. Death is not given space in public discourse, resulting in a greater society that is in denial of the realities of loss, how it affects us and the inevitability that we will all experience it in our lives. This resource has been created to fill the gap on our campus, and provide critical, comprehensive and diverse information under the umbrella of grief, death and dying to stimulate open conversation and curiosity amongst our student body.

Whether you are grieving, know someone who is grieving or are just curious about the cultures and practices associated with death and dying, we hope we can provide you with comfort and clarity.

This resource is dedicated to aiding students at Queen’s University, so let us acknowledge that Queen’s is situated on traditional Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee territory. We are grateful to be able to live, learn and play on these lands of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and Anishinabek Nation.

To acknowledge this traditional territory is to recognize its longer history, one predating the establishment of the earliest European colonies. It is also to acknowledge this territory’s significance for the Indigenous Peoples who lived, and continue to live upon it and whose practices and spiritualities were tied to the land and continue to develop in relationship to the territory and its other inhabitants today.
